  • Piccalilly send organic cotton baby hats to Malawi

A donation of our organic cotton baby hats are sent to Malawi A donation of Piccalilly organic cotton baby hats was sent to Malawi following the Hats for Malawi appeal.

When Jenny sent out a request for baby hats for Malawi Piccalilly were delighted to help sending 50 organic cotton baby hats and children's hats plus some organic cotton bibs too!

Jenny Lemon is a senior paediatric doctor who is spending a year volunteering at the Queen Elizabeth (QE) government hospital in Blantyre, Malawi. Malawi is the third poorest country in the world, and 75% of the population live on less than $1.25 per day, that’s 97p to you and me!

Queen Elizabeth Government Hospital is one of the largest in Malawi, and is a tertiary referral unit with the most serious cases being referred there. The paediatric wing at Queen Elizabeth has 300 beds, and treats children with a range of acute and chronic medical conditions such as HIV, TB and Malaria to name a few.

Because of the underlying health conditions in Malawi, the child mortality rate is one of the highest in the world with 13,720 newborns dying in 2015. The worst bit is over 80 percent of those deaths were from preventable causes. The newborn mortality rate has been steadily decreasing, but progress on newborn health has been significantly slower than progress on health for all children under the age of 5. Additionally, Malawi has the highest rate of premature births worldwide, with only 18.1 percent chance of a successful live birth occurring before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

If this wasn’t enough the power supply in Malawi can be unreliable, and the hospital has no heating in winter, during which season the night time temperature drops to around 10 degrees c. Only the pediatric critical care unit has a small wall mounted heaters and incubator heating.

Here at Piccalilly we were told of the conditions out in Malawi and of Jenny and Mark’s appeal for baby hats and we simply had to help. Designing baby and kids clothing is what we do, so we were delighted to put together a range of organic cotton baby hats plus some organic cotton bibs too to help the youngsters through the colder months.

In Malawi, Mark (Jenny’s Father) hand delivered our Piccalilly donations to some very appreciative staff. These will be used for children in critical care and rather interestingly, one of the nurses commented that the particular design of our organic cotton knotted baby hats would be perfect for children with hydrocephalus (water on the brain), and will be kept for this use.

Jenny wishes to thank everyone involved with the collection saying “These will help so many little ones. They will be life savers in the weeks to come. The huge response from those so far away, and with no direct contact with Malawi is truly amazing”.

We are happy to help Jenny!
